Personally I would call this guy commuting on a Ural yesterday morning with temps in the teens a hero especially since he seems to be appropriately dressed but others might disagree.

It’s a tire issue. People ride snowmobiles in colder weather all the time. If they are dressed for the weather and the tires are good down to the temp. Hero all day.

I won’t get on my bike if the temps are below 45. The tires are hard enough as is at that temp. I’m not going below their rating.

Where this guy has the advantage is his 2WD Ural. I still give him props for being out there with little or no wind protection except for his snowmobile suit.

No, they don’t use salt here and it hasn’t snowed for a while. It would be interesting to see if he rides when they spray the roads with the deicer brine.

I believe the answer is somewhat related to the old adage for other drivers on the road : if they’re slower than you, they’re idiots. If they’re faster, they’re @ssholes.

Here, if he’s not as cool as you, he’s an idiot. If he’s cooler than you, he’s a hero.

He’s definitely cooler than me  ( Pun intended). So he’s a hero.

There’s a guy near me that rides a motorcycle all year round, it’s got some nearly looking studded tires, that may or may not be road legal. That guy is nuts, because his bike only has 2 tires.

Old coworker of mine pedal bikes to work every day. He posted up his new cold-temp commute yesterday morning, -44°C, before wind was factored. Buddy on the Ural looks like he's doing alright.
